Firefighter Fun Run
Firefighters from Fire and Rescue Station 9, Mount Vernon, and Fire and Rescue Station 24, Woodlawn, will partner with the Mount Vernon Athletic Club in support of a Kids One-Mile Run/Walk, Saturday, July 30, 2011, at 9 a.m., at the Mount Vernon Athletic Club.
The purpose of the Kids One-Mile Fun Run/Walk is to show children how to have fun exercising and to learn about the importance of nutrition. Giveaways, healthy snacks, and refreshments will be provided for all participants.
The day started with Mount Vernon Athletic Club staff warming up the crowd. The personal trainers at MTVAC made it fun while also demonstrating and explaining the importance of regular activity and the need to keep moving.
The 1 mile run was the first many of the kids and parents had been a part of and they were encouraged by all of the Alexandria fire fighters and EMT’s who cheered them on – often running beside them.
MTVAC staff and local first responders and police handed out sneakers and sports equipment to the local children. Many of the kids in attendance did not own a pair of sneakers. The soccer balls were the most popular as were the backpacks that the kids received.
Firefighters also provided kids a show-and-tell of their apparatus and equipment. Both the parents and the children had a great time and loved the ability to get up close to the fire trucks.
