Record Breaking Fundraiser: MTVAC’s 9th Annual Swing Pink Charity Event
Mount Vernon Athletic Club Donates $14,718 Dollars to INOVA Mount Vernon Hospital and INOVA Alexandria Hospital Cancer Center
Mount Vernon Athletic Club (MTVAC), hosted the 9th Annual “Swing for Pink” tennis charity event in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Since 2006, the club has been hosting this event and has raised over $112,000 for the cause. The funds raised by Swing for Pink are used at the Breast Care Institute at INOVA Mount Vernon Hospital and INOVA Alexandria Hospital Cancer Center to help patients face the numerous challenges of this disease, including assistance with coordinating appointments, nutrition, and questions about their condition.
Donations Stay in the Community
INOVA Alexandria Hospital, donations have helped secure transportation for needy patients so they can get treatment. Taxi service and gas cards are just two examples. Funds have also gone toward helping with rental payments and car payments for individuals who are not able to work because their treatments have made them too ill. According to Lori Powell, Regional Manager of the INOVA Alexandria Hospital Foundation and INOVA Mount Vernon Hospital Office, help with these sorts of payments have been such a relief for people because whatever energy they have needs to be focused on getting well and not how to keep food on their table and the lights on.
“Thank you all so very much for everything you do for both hospitals. I can’t tell you enough how very much we appreciate everyone and all MTVAC and its members do for our community!” – Lori Powell Regional Manager of the INOVA Alexandria Hospital Foundation and INOVA Mount Vernon Hospital Office
The charity event was open to the public and included a tennis round robin, a silent auction, dinner, wine tasting, and more. In addition to event sponsor, Joan Van Metre, and host sponsor, Kihomac, Inc., major sponsors included: The Carol Farquhar Family, Charles Thompson of Charles Schwab Investments, Blue Chip Tennis Academy, Rex Reiley of Re-Max Group, and Dr. Brian Bodnar of Bodnar Chiropractic.
Special appreciation and thanks goes to Gordon and Anita Murchie and the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Association (aswawines.org) for all their support over the past 9 years. They provide the wines and personally oversee the wine tasting portion of the evening and member Stephanie Melvin of Wisteria whose flowers/arrangements always lend elegance to the evening.
MTVAC General Manager, Aaron Volbrecht, exclaims, “It has been an honor to have such a strong membership that organizes and participates in this event each year. The amount of heart that goes into it is overwhelming and humbling. We can’t wait to host the 10th Annual Swing for Pink in 2015!”
