4 Tips for a Safe Summer Fitness Workout

Summer days are finally here! But after exercising in cooler temperatures, hot and humid days can feel overwhelming – even for the most experienced fitness guru. Mount Vernon Athletic Club wants you to have a safe fitness workout this summer. Here are a few tips for staying cool while you get your sweat on.

1. Drink Up During Your Fitness Workout

Stay hydrated during your summer fitness workoutWorking out in hot weather naturally increases your body temperature, which causes you to sweat. If exposed to hot temperatures too long, your body’s natural cooling system can fail. And if you exercise when it’s humid out, your sweat doesn’t evaporate as readily, which causes your body temperature to increase even more.

That’s why it’s important to stay hydrated and drink lots of water – we tend to loose 2% to 3% of water during exercise. Another way to replace valuable electrolyte loss is to eat a piece of fruit during a break. A lot of fruits and veggies are up to 90% water, plus the added nutrients to keep your workout going strong. 

2. Keep an Eye on the Weather

If there’s a heat advisory (high ozone and air pollution), you might want to take your fitness workout indoors. These pollutants can damage your lungs or worse, cause heat exhaustion. Each year, approximately 6,000 Americans are rushed to the emergency room after overheating during a sport or recreational activity.

3. Listen To Your Body

The summertime doesn’t mean you have to stop your fitness workouts all together! Just listen to your body. If you start to feel dizzy, faint or nauseous, stop your workout immediately. It’s better to take it easy than push your body to the point where you are endangering your health and well being. 

4. Wear Loose, Light-Colored Clothing

When taking your workout outdoors, light colors will help reflect the heat, and cotton material will help evaporate sweat. Many clothing stores and brands offer specially designed, hi-tech gear that wicks away moisture. Shirts, shorts and pants are made from material meant to keep you cool, indoors and out. Some even protect you from the sun’s harsh UV rays.
